The workplace is undergoing a profound shift characterized by the integration of cutting-edge technology and a heightened focus on human connections. With more Americans aging out of the workforce than entering it, immigrants play an increasingly crucial role in the labor market.
The number of foreign-born people in the workforce has steadily risen for decades, a trend that isn’t going anywhere. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of foreign-born workers in the U.S. increased to 29.8 million in 2022, up about 6% from the previous year. In comparison, native-born workers grew barely one percent – from 133.2 million to 134.5 million.
One key factor is that a bigger share of the immigrant population is of working age (18-64), at 77%, according to the Migration Policy Institute (MPI). That compares with about 59% of the native-born population.
It’s worth noting that “foreign-born” and “immigrant” are used interchangeably and refer to persons with no U.S. citizenship at birth. This population includes naturalized citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, and asylees, persons on certain temporary visas, and unauthorized immigrants.

A study by McKinsey & Company found that companies with a more diverse workforce are 36% more likely to outperform their less diverse counterparts in terms of financial performance.
