Embarking on an expat journey can be both exciting and daunting. As someone who has experienced multiple relocations, I've learned firsthand the importance of language and intercultural training in ensuring a smooth transition.

Personal Experiences

I became an expat in 2007 when I moved from Saint-Petersburg to Vienna for my studies. I didn’t speak German at the time, but English was enough for both my studies and joining international student communities. It was by far the easiest relocation I have ever experienced! The campus provided accommodations, the food was manageable, and my social life was great. But learning German? That was a different story.

At the time, I thought my English (and Russian) would be sufficient, so I didn’t invest much effort into German language training, which is a decision I now regret.

Looking back, yes, I completed my studies and even had the opportunity to work for the UN, but I never truly integrated into Austrian society.

Fast forward three years. I relocated to Gibraltar and then moved to the UK two years later. That last move was by far the most difficult! Even though I had family support and was fluent in English (or so I thought until I encountered the Northern accent), I struggled to find the job I wanted. I had to take a step back in my career, which felt uncomfortable but gave me a new perspective on the relocation process. The social aspect was equally tough—I knew a few people from work and locally but making new friends and establishing a social circle was a real challenge.

There are plenty of ways to meet new people, but it requires being proactive, open-minded, and sometimes brave, and these are the qualities that don’t always come naturally to me.
