At Global LT, our teachers are at the heart of what we do. We pride ourselves on the exceptional quality of our language teachers and their ability to build strong connections with their students. This month, we’re highlighting Puteri, a talented Bahasa Indonesia teacher who embodies our commitment to personalized language learning.
“Bahasa” in Indonesian means “language”, so “Bahasa Indonesia” means “Indonesian language”. Indonesian is a form of Malay, spoken in Indonesia. There are about 35 million first language speakers of Indonesian, and about 150 million second language speakers. Outside of Indonesia, Indonesian is spoken in the Netherlands, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and the U.S.
Puteri currently lives in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. As an interior designer, she has worked and lived in culturally diverse societies such as Qatar, Germany, and Belgium.
Puteri started teaching in 2002 while finishing her interior design thesis. She was given the privilege of becoming a Student Assistant, assisting the professors with lectures and working side-by-side with the students. This is where her love for teaching began.
In January 2012, she began teaching with Global LT. “I was just very lucky that someone from Global LT viewed my profile and contacted me. I cannot believe it’s been over a decade since I started teaching with Global LT – the hours flew by!”
Puteri teaches Indonesian with Global LT, but she also speaks English and German. “I’m very keen on learning languages. I’m currently learning Japanese. This is the first time I’ve immersed myself in the Japanese language, and it’s really fun!”
When beginning with a new student, Puteri always shares, “It is like entering a dark tunnel, and I am here bringing the lantern. Let us walk this journey together.”
For Puteri, teaching is a passion that’s almost instinctual. The classroom is a place for learning and connection, and the friendships she develops go beyond the classroom.
When asked what she loves most about teaching, she said, “I have the best students. It is truly rewarding when I see them discover their potential and see the growing confidence as they grasp the understanding and explore different facets of the subjects. Language is an intrinsic part of culture, and I have an immense amount of respect for anyone trying to learn Bahasa Indonesia.”
As a teacher, Puteri knows that every student is unique and learns in their own way. “Every student has some potential that can be evolved in intentional ways. It’s important to respect the student’s speed on how they process information and to adapt to their unique rhythms. Recognizing and celebrating small victories is an essential aspect of teaching.”
As one of our dedicated Indonesian language teachers, Puteri has received outstanding feedback from her students. Here's a glimpse into some of their experiences:
“The language training has been most helpful and has built the foundation for me to develop my Bahasa Indonesian. Puteri is an excellent language tutor, both knowledgeable and patient as she has been guiding me through the course. She has also made the course enjoyable. The combination of the language tutor and the course book works. It would be much more difficult with just a book.”
“Overall, I am very satisfied with the training program. Puteri is a great instructor and she has been able to adapt the material and the pace to my own needs. I feel that the lessons have been very productive and are giving me a very good start, I will definitely need to continue working on my own, but I think what I have achieved so far is very helpful.”
“I have now completed the 50 hours of Indonesian language training. My feedback on Puteri, my Bahasa teacher, couldn’t be any better. Puteri is patient, she has the right strategies to keep students motivated, she is available to answer questions and correct homework every day, via WhatsApp and email. I was able to complete almost all the material she provided during the last months (my 50 hours) and I am willing to continue with her to make sure I progress on my Bahasa which is already good enough for day-to-day conversation in restaurants, shopping, traveling, etc.!”
“The learning material was interesting, but we went beyond that and had a lot of conversations to work on my verbal fluency. Puteri also provided insights on Indonesian culture, life in Jakarta, and hints on adapting at work, recommendations of places to visit, restaurants etc.”
“I was very lucky to have Puteri as my teacher and would highly recommend her to anyone willing to learn Bahasa Indonesia.”
